LYNETTE SALTZMAN

Westport, Connecticut
Best In Show

Lynette SaltzmanAs a New York native and longtime Shetland Sheepdog fancier, Lynette Saltzman has always considered the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show to be very special. After all, she has attended every show since 1949 and finished her first champion here in 1957.

But 2005, in her 57th consecutive appearance at Westminster's annual event February 14-15, she will enjoy a once-in-a-lifetime experience when she steps to the center of the ring as the judge for Best In Show, to make the ultimate award at the world's pre-eminent dog show.

The first dog show that she ever attended was Westminster in 1949. Shortly after that, she put a Utility degree on her first Sheltie and got more involved in the sport, including conformation exhibiting. She married Stanley Saltzman in 1956 and together they began breeding Shelties, producing many champions through the years under their Catamount prefix. They also exhibited Doberman Pinschers and a Brussels Griffon.

She judged the Herding Group in 1991 and the Working Group in 1999. She has judged the Shetland Sheepdog National Specialty twice, and has judged in Europe, Australia, New Zealand, South America, Canada and the West Indies.

She has been President of Tri-State Shetland Sheepdog Club and the Longshore-Southport Kennel club, serving as the all-breed show chairman for 15 years for the latter. She has been an active delegate to the AKC from the American Shetland Sheepdog Association for over 25 years, and is responsible for, among other things, the division of the Working Group into two Groups. She has written for a number of magazines and journals over the years and has received an award from the Dog Writers Association of America.

Mrs. Saltzman is an artist with additional interests in photography and computer graphics. She is also an ardent gardener and collects Conifers. She and her husband travel extensively, with a special interest in France. They have three daughters and three grand daughters.
