![]() JOSH - AMERICA'S DOG 2004 They say that the dog that wins Best In Show at Westminster becomes America's Dog for the next year. That certainly came true for Josh, the big black, happy and huggable 155-pound Newfoundland who captured the dog world's biggest prize, Best In Show win at the Westminster Kennel Club's 128th Annual Dog Show in February of 2004.
Media appearances are always the rule the day after the show, and Ch. Darbydale's All Rise Pouch Cove (his formal name) made the rounds on Good Morning America, CNN, Fox News, Inside Edition, Extra!, Charlie Rose and Late Night with David Letterman, among others. People flocked to him on the streets of New York, calling after him, "Josh!" just as the fans had the night before in Madison Square Garden. He was the subject of a cartoon in the New York Daily News by the world-renowned Bill Gallo. He was in an editorial cartoon with John Kerry in the Washington Post. Fan mail started pouring in right away.
He also got the super star treatment on "Josh Day" in his hometown of Flemington, NJ in June. His fans packed a local park as the New Jersey State Senate proclaimed it "Josh Day" in his honor. Among those on hand to pay tribute were State Senator Leonard Lance, who read the Senate proclamation, and Flemington Mayor Ken Kutscher, who presented Josh with the "bone to the city."
Hundreds of fans of all ages turned out for the chance to pet Josh and have their photograph taken with him, something that doesn't happen with most superstars in this day and age. There was a $5 charge for the photo opportunity, with all proceeds going to the local Woodlands Wildlife Refuge and the Hunterdon County SPCA. After three hours, they ran out of film but made over $3,000 for the charities that day. |
