Reynolds, a highly-respected all-breed judge from Ottawa, will become the first foreign judge since 1930 to select the Best In Show winner when he does so at the 130th Annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show this February in New York City, the club announced today. Mr. Reynolds has judged many breeds on seven previous assignments at the dog show world's most prestigious competition, as well as the Toy Group in 1996 and the Non-Sporting Group in 2002. He will be the first foreign judge to select the ultimate winner at Westminster since W.L. McCandlish of England did the honors 76 years ago. Mr. Reynolds heads a panel of 36 judges from 17 states, Canada and England. Group judges will be Mr. Michael Faulkner of Center Cross, VA (Sporting); Dr. Donald Sturz of Huntington, NY (Hound); Ms. Patricia Laurans of Newtown, CT (Working); Mrs. Peggy Beisel-McIlwaine of Ann Arbor, MI (Terrier); Dr. Harry Smith of Durham, NC (Toy); Mr. Roger Hartinger of Cincinnati, OH (Non-Sporting); and Mr. Rick Gschwender of Oxford, MI (Herding). Mrs. James Edward Clark of Greenwood, DE will judge the Junior Showmanship Finals. Of special interest is the presence on the judging panel of David and Peggy Helming, owners of Ch. Darbydale's All Rise Pouch Cove, the Newfoundland that won Best In Show at Westminster in 2004. Mr. Helming will judge Newfoundlands and Mrs. Helming will judge Portuguese Water Dogs. All Westminster judging assignments are pending approval by the American Kennel Club. There are 165 breeds and varieties eligible for competition. The Westminster Kennel Club is America's oldest organization dedicated to the sport of purebred dogs. Established in 1877, Westminster's influence has been felt for more than a century through its famous all breed, benched dog show held every year at New York's Madison Square Garden. The show is America's second longest continuously held sporting event, behind only the Kentucky Derby.
