Entry Maxes Out Once Again

For the first time since 1998, New York leads entries with 255, California has 234 as entries come from 49 states (where's North Dakota?) and many foreign countries

Rhodesian Ridgebacks (56), Golden Retrievers (46), French Bulldogs (44) are the leading entries among the 179 breeds and varieties

Entries for the 135th Annual Westminster Kennel Club All Breed Dog Show will once again be coming to New York from all over the world, as Westminster extends its reign as America's second longest continuously held sporting event, behind only the Kentucky Derby.

Preliminary figures, subject to final audit, show that a total of 2,597 dogs and 128 Junior Showmanship entries, representing all of the 179 breeds and varieties eligible are entered at Madison Square Garden February 14-15, 2011.

Entries came from 49 states, Washington D.C. and Canada. For the first time since 1998, New York has overtaken California in total entries. New York had 255, California 234, and Pennsylvania 211. Other states in the top ten with entries include New Jersey 167, Texas 134, Massachusetts 109, Connecticut 106, Florida 104, North Carolina 90, and Virginia 87. There were no entries received from North Dakota. There were 112 foreign entries that came from Canada (95), Germany, Brazil, Japan, Mexico, Australia, Belgium, Bermuda, France, Italy, Slovenia, Sweden, and Thailand. However, many foreign-bred dogs are entered from U.S. addresses, and in the final compilation there will be a number of additional foreign countries represented.

Rhodesian Ridgebacks provided the highest entry with 56. Other top entries include Golden Retrievers (46), French Bulldogs (44), Vizslas (40), Australian Shepherds (39), Labrador Retrievers (38), German Shorthaired Pointers (36), Pugs (33), and Cavalier King Charles Spaniels (31). There were 61 total entries in three varieties of Dachshunds, 40 Chihuahuas (two varieties), and 36 Poodles (three varieties). There are three breeds with only one entry: American Water Spaniels, Neapolitan Mastiffs, and English Toy Spaniels (Blenheim/Prince Charles variety).

The entry includes six breeds newly-recognized by the American Kennel Club that are eligible for Westminster for the first time: Boykin Spaniels (Sporting Group, 16 entries), Bluetick Coonhounds (Hound, 4), Redbone Coonhounds (Hound, 11), Cane Corsos (Working, 18), Leonbergers (Working, 13), and Icelandic Sheepdogs (Herding, 4).

Breeds and varieties in the Hound, Toy, Non-Sporting and Herding Groups will be benched and judged during the day on Monday, with Group competition that evening. On Tuesday, breeds and varieties in the Sporting, Working and Terrier Groups will be benched and judged. Judging of those Groups and Best In Show, featuring all seven of the Group winners, to be held Tuesday evening in the final event of the show.

The evening competition will be televised live each night beginning at 8 p.m. (ET). The first hour of Monday evening's show will air from 8-9 p.m. ET on USA Network, and the final two hours will air from 9-11 p.m. ET on CNBC. Tuesday's show will air in its entirety on USA Network from 8-11 p.m. ET. Westminster, televised since 1948, is and always has been America's most widely-watched live telecast of a dog show. In addition, millions of visitors to the Westminster Web site (www.westminsterkennelclub.org) viewed streaming video of the individual breed judging highlights, judging results and photos.

Best In Show will be judged by Mr. Paolo Dondina of Monterchi, Italy. He heads a panel of 32 judges from 15 states and three foreign countries.

All of the Group judges for 2011 previously have judged Best In Show at Westminster: Mr. James Reynolds of Nepean, Ontario, Canada (Sporting); Dr. Robert Indeglia of Naragansett, RI (Hound); Mrs. Dorothy Collier of Wellington Beach, FL (Working); Mr. Edd Bivin of Fort Worth, TX (Terrier); Mr. Frank Sabella of Tampa, FL (Toy); Mr. W. Everett Dean, Jr. of Richmond, VA (Non-Sporting); and Ms. Lynette Saltzman of Westport, CT (Herding). Mrs. Linda Pitts of Knoxville, TN will judge the Junior Showmanship Finals.
