From Sea To Shining Sea And Then Some: 134th Westminster Attracts Entries From Everywhere

California (251 entries) and New York (224) once again lead the way; Australian Shepherds (44), Rhodesian Ridgebacks (43), Labrador Retrievers (42) and Golden Retrievers (40) boast largest entries

NEW YORK (December 30, 2009) - Entries for the 134th Annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show came from all over the world and helped the club quickly reach its entry limit for its upcoming show this February, the club announced today.

A total entry of 2,500 dogs and 120 Junior Showmanship entries will be on hand at Madison Square Garden on February 15-16 as Westminster extends its reign as America's second longest continuously held sporting event, behind only the Kentucky Derby.

For the 11th straight year, California is the state with the most entries (251). New York, also for the 11th straight year, had the second most (224). Other states in the top ten include Pennsylvania (209), New Jersey (158), Texas (126), Florida (124), Connecticut (121), Massachusetts (110), Ohio (110), and Maryland (98). Foreign entries came from Canada, Brazil, Japan, Belgium, France, Germany, Slovenia, and Thailand. However, many foreign bred dogs are entered from U.S. addresses, and in the final compilation there will be a number of additional foreign countries represented.

Australian Shepherds drew the largest entry for an individual breed or variety with 44. Other large entries include Rhodesian Ridgebacks 43, Labrador Retrievers 42, Golden Retrievers 40, Pugs 36, French Bulldogs 36, and German Shorthaired Pointers 36. Dachshunds drew 63 in three varieties.

All of the 173 breeds and varieties recognized by the American Kennel Club will be represented at the show. Three breeds are eligible for the first time for judging at Westminster: the Irish Red and White Setter with 8 entries (Sporting Group), the Norwegian Buhund with 4 entries (Herding Group), and the Pyrenean Shepherd with 17 entries (Herding Group).

Breeds and varieties in the Hound, Toy, Non-Sporting and Herding Groups will be benched and judged during the day on Monday, with Group competition that evening. On Tuesday, breeds and varieties in the Sporting, Working and Terrier Groups will be benched and judged. Judging of those Groups and Best In Show, featuring all seven of the Group winners, to be held Tuesday evening in the final event of the show.

The evening competition will be televised live each night beginning at 8 PM (ET). The first hour of Monday evening's show will air from 8-9 pm ET on USA Network, and the final two hours will air from 9-11 pm ET on CNBC. Tuesday's show will air in its entirety on USA Network from 8-11 pm ET. Westminster, televised since 1948, is and always has been America's most widely-watched live telecast of a dog show. In addition, millions of visitors to the Westminster Web site (www.westminsterkennelclub.org) viewed streaming video of the individual breed judging highlights, judging results and photos.

The breed judging schedule will be posted on the Westminster Web site when finalized.

Best In Show will be judged by Mr. Elliott Weiss of Eagle, Idaho. He heads a panel of 41 judges from 18 states.

Group judges will be Dr. Donald Sturz, Jr., from Centerport, NY (Sporting); Mr. W. Everett Dean, Jr. of Richmond, VA (Hound); Mrs. Kimberly Meredith-Cavanna of Pleasant Hill, CA (Working); Mrs. Loraine Boutwell of Kansas City, MO (Terrier); Mrs. Shirley Limoges of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada (Toy); Mrs. Dorothy Dalton of Stuart, FL (Non-Sporting); and Ms. Linda More of Cary, NC (Herding). Mrs. Jennifer Pahl of Princess Anne, MD will judge the Junior Showmanship Finals.
