Once Again - For The 136th Consecutive Year - The World Comes To New York For The Westminster Kennel Club All Breed Dog Show

Rhodesian Ridgebacks (40), French Bulldogs (39), Labradors (38) lead the way; Most entries come from New York (204), California (187) and Pennsylvania (167)

As has happened every year since 1877, entries from all over America and the rest of the world are once again heading to New York City for the world's most famous dog show, the Westminster Kennel Club All Breed Dog Show at Madison Square Garden on February 13-14, 2012.

With this, its 136th Annual Show, Westminster extends its reign as America's second longest continuously held sporting event, behind only the Kentucky Derby.

Preliminary figures, subject to final audit, show that a total of 2,077 dogs and 105 Junior Showmanship entries, representing all of the 185 breeds and varieties eligible, are entered at the Garden. (The Westminster entry limit for 2012 was lowered to 2,000 dogs due to the renovation work being done at the Garden, comparing with the past limit of 2,500 dogs.)

Entries came from 47 states, Washington D.C., and Puerto Rico. For the second straight year, New York has the most entries with 204. California has 187, Pennsylvania 167, New Jersey 131, and Texas 117. There are 91 foreign entries, led by Canada with 82. Dogs are also entered from Brazil, China, Japan, Italy, Mexico, Peru and Russia. Many other foreign bred dogs are entered from U.S. addresses, and in the final compilation there will be additional foreign countries represented.

For the second consecutive year, Rhodesian Ridgebacks provided the highest entry with 40, followed closely by French Bulldogs (39), Labrador Retrievers (38), Golden Retrievers (32), and Vizslas (29). There were 60 total entries in three varieties of Dachshunds and 34 in Poodles (three varieties). The smallest entry is 2, which happened in American Water Spaniels, Harriers, Kuvaszok, Sealyham Terriers and Canaan Dogs.

The entry includes six breeds newly-recognized by the American Kennel Club that are eligible for Westminster for the first time: American English Coonhounds (3 entries, Hound Group), Cesky Terriers (3, Terrier Group), Norwegian Lundehunds (5, Non-Sporting Group), Xoloitzcuintlis (10, Non-Sporting Group), Entlebucher Mountain Dogs (4, Herding Group), and Finnish Lapphunds (8, Herding Group).

Breeds and varieties in the Hound, Toy, Non-Sporting and Herding Groups will be benched and judged during the day on Monday, with Group competition that evening. On Tuesday, breeds and varieties in the Sporting, Working and Terrier Groups will be benched and judged. Judging of those Groups will take place on Tuesday night, with judging of Best In Show, featuring all seven of the Group winners, to be held Tuesday evening in the final event of the show.

The evening competition will be televised live each night beginning at 8 p.m. (ET). The first hour of Monday evening's show will air from 8-9 p.m. ET on USA Network, and the final two hours will air from 9-11 p.m. ET on CNBC. Tuesday's show will air in its entirety on USA Network from 8-11 p.m. ET. Westminster, televised since 1948, is and always has been America's most widely-watched live telecast of a dog show. In addition, millions of visitors to the Westminster website (www.westminsterkennelclub.org) can view streaming video of the individual breed judging highlights, judging results and photos.

Best In Show will be judged by Mrs. Cindy Vogels of Greenwood Village, CO. Mrs. Vogels heads a panel of 38 judges from 19 states presiding over the dog world's most prestigious event.

Group judges are Mr. W. Terry Stacy of Chapel Hill, NC, Sporting; Ms. Patricia Laurans, of Newtown, CT, Hound; Ms. Betty Regina Leininger of Frisco, TX, Working; Mr. William F. Potter II of St. Louis, MO, Terrier; Mr. Tim Catterson, of New Castle, IN, Toy; Mr. Randy Garren, Apex, NC, Non-Sporting; and Mr. Houston Clark, of Decatur, KY, Herding.
