Here is a summary of key points, rules and information for The Westminster Kennel Club's 2013 Show. Please refer to the official Premium List for the complete rules and policies.
The Premium List will contain all information regarding entry requirements, entry deadlines, benching, equipment and other information. Please read carefully and follow the instructions precisely. Mistakes in the entry procedure can hold up processing, result in an entry being returned, of even the disallowance of a win.
2013 Entry Limitations
Entries are limited to 3,200 dogs/bitches that meet the following requirements:
1. The Invited Top Five Champions in each breed/variety based on the number of dogs defeated in breed competition only at AKC Licensed or Member shows held from January 1, 2012 through October 31, 2012, inclusive. A listing of the Top Five dogs to be invited will be posted on www.westminsterkennelclub.org and www.infodog.com as soon as final statistics are received from AKC.
2. The Invited Best of Breed winners of AKC Licensed or Member National Breed Club Specialties held from January 1, 2012 through October 31, 2012, inclusive. A listing of the National Breed Specialty Best of Breed Winners will be posted on www.westminsterkennelclub.org and www.infodog.com as soon as final statistics are received from AKC.
3. Non-Invited dogs/bitches eligible for Best of Breed competition that have attained their Championship status prior to the submission of the entry for the dog/bitch. You must name the show and date where the dog became a Champion on the entry form.
4. Non-Invited dogs/bitches eligible for Bred By Exhibitor, American Bred and Open classes that have won at least one 3-point, 4-point or 5-point major award prior to the submission of the entry. You must name the show and date where the qualifying major was won on the entry form. New Award: All dogs finishing their championships at Westminster in 2013 are eligible to receive a special bronze medallion in commemoration of that win. In order to receive one of these medallions, the owner must send the Westminster Kennel Club office a copy of their dog's AKC Championship Certificate stating that it did indeed win its final points at Westminster in 2013.
Junior Showmanship is not included in the Breed Entry Limit. Dogs entered for Junior Showmanship Only are not required to be benched.

LIMITED CLASS: Beginning with the 2013 show, Junior Handlers will be invited to enter if they have been placed Best Junior Handler (with competition for Best Junior) at seven or more AKC Licensed or Member shows held between November 1, 2011, and October 31, 2012 (inclusive), and who were at least 9 years old and under 18 years old at the time of each qualifying win. A memento Certificate of eligibility, along with a blank entry form and return envelope, will be sent via First Class mail to the address on file with our superintendent. Address changes for the Qualifying Certificate must be reported to the Superintendent prior to 5 p.m. (ET), November 1, 2012. It is the exhibitor's responsibility to verify the address on file with the Superintendent.
Only those Juniors whose names appear on the posted list will be eligible for the Junior Showmanship competition at this show. For dogs attempting to enter both Juniors and the breed competition, acceptance into the Junior showmanship class at this show does NOT guarantee acceptance into the breed competition.
Entries for dogs entered in breed competition and in Junior Showmanship competition are subject to all the provisions outlined in this premium list and on the entry form as to fee, closing date, eligibility, benching, etc. Due to the large entry, a Junior may be judged on a day different from the day that their breed is benched.
Dogs that are entered in Junior Showmanship only are not benched. Dogs entered in Juniors in addition to Breed/Variety classes are benched.
Entries for dogs entered in Junior Showmanship may not be postmarked any time prior to the list of qualifying Juniors being posted at www.westminsterkennelclub.org and/or www.infodog.com or November 16, 2012, whichever is the earliest date. However, all forms must be completed and received by MB-F, Inc., P.O. Box 22067, Greensboro, NC 27420, no later than 3 p.m. (ET), Friday, December 7, 2012.
Benching Format for 2013
Due to the remodeling of Madison Square Garden to serve its core activities, The Westminster Kennel Club has made decisions regarding their show with the safety and well-being of the dogs, exhibitors and spectators foremost in mind. All Breed benching/
judging and Junior Showmanship Preliminaries on Monday and Tuesday will take place at Piers 92/94. There will also be Multi-Breed space available for those persons meeting the requirements to be in that space. The Variety Group benching/ judging and Junior Showmanship Finals will be held at Madison Square Garden, Monday and Tuesday evenings. A layout of both venues will be included with the judging program. All exhibitors will be assigned to a specific area that will be reserved for dogs and grooming.
The Piers will see the return of our traditional fixed benching. At Madison Square Garden, the benching space for our Best of Breed Winners will consist of individual 5' x 5' pipe and draped spaces for each dog. Each of the MSG spaces will include an appropriately sized grooming table which is owned by the club.
In both locations, all dogs MUST be on their benches and must be able to be viewed by the public. Grooming will take place at the dog's bench space. Dogs are required to be on their benches until the published release time except for exercising or judging. Monday's four Variety Group Winners are required to be on benches Tuesday in a reserved space from 11:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. in Pier 94. To afford the best utilization of the balance of our space in the benching/grooming areas, all regular vendors will be located at Piers 92/94.
Westminster will provide bus transportation from the Hotel Pennsylvania, Affinia Manhattan and the New Yorker Hotel to the Piers for exhibitors and their dogs beginning at 5:30 a.m. and return trips as dogs are released from benching up to 11
p.m. Bus transportation for Best of Breed winners and their handlers will be provided from the Piers to Madison Square Garden and a return to the Piers each day. Schedule information will be provided in the judging program.
We ask the cooperation of our exhibitors as we institute these changes at both our new and traditional facilities respectively. We request you bring only those items necessary for the grooming, exhibition, and crating comfort of your entered dogs. Crates/tack must be stacked whenever possible. Fire regulations will not permit chairs or other impediments in any aisleway. Saving space(s) is not permitted. Personnel will be available to assist those needing help getting their crates/equipment to the appropriate area and in stacking crates/equipment.
By entering this show, all participants agree to the following: All rights to advertise, promote, publicize, photograph, televise, videotape audiotape or otherwise exploit the show are vested in The Westminster Kennel Club and its assigns. This includes the use of the names, likenesses, voices or biographical matter of all dogs, owners, handlers, and kennels participating in the show. All persons and animals on the showgrounds at any time while the show is in progress, do by attending this show or participating therein, grant to the Club the right to advertise, promote, publicize, photograph, televise, videotape audiotape or otherwise exploit their likeness and voice in any manner without further release or consent.
The Club permits only its credentialed personnel to use any video recording devices at any of the venues for this show. Madison Square Garden prohibits the use of video recording devices at their site. This includes cell phone recordings.
The Westminster Kennel Club reserves the right to broadcast or cause to be broadcast any or all portions of The Westminster Kennel Club Dog show by any means of known transmission of video material.
This Show is governed by the American Kennel Club rules. Exhibitors should read
the AKC agreement on the back of the Westminster entry blank in the Premium
List and read the AKC Rules Applying to Dog Shows, including benching rules, and
the rules of The Westminster Kennel Club contained in the premium list.
Loss or Damage
The Westminster Kennel Club and its Superintendent caution all persons entering
the show site and show grounds against all hazards which may exist, including,
but not limited to: Condition of the site/grounds, parking/loading/unloading areas,
entrances, floors and stairways, elevators and escalators, floor coverings, walkways,
tenting/canopies, electrical appliances, cords and fittings, exercise pens, and the
presence of animals. All persons should take into consideration this is a sporting
event and dress, act and exercise caution appropriate for the activity involved. All
persons entering the show, the grounds, site and show areas for whatever purpose
do so entirely at their own risk. By virtue of entering the show, the entrant has
indicated their acceptance of the terms listed in this premium list and assumes all
The Director of the Bureau of Animal Affairs of New York City requires all dogs entering the City of New York to be accompanied by a Health Certificate issued by a licensed veterinarian no more than 7 days prior to arrival in the City. Exhibitors should follow their veterinarians' recommendation to assure their dogs are free of internal and external parasites, any communicable diseases, and have appropriate vaccinations.
New York City law states that people exercising dogs are responsible for cleaning up the feces. The law is strictly enforced and punishable by a $100 fine. The Department of Sanitation will be enforcing the "Pooper-scooper" law and will be writing tickets for fines in the amount of $100. Dog waste both inside and outside the building must be picked up and disposed of sanitarily. Failure to do so may result in an Event Committee hearing and/or refusal of future entries by this club.
