The Basenji is a small, short-haired African hunting dog easily identifiable by his tightly curled tail, wrinkled brow and proud, graceful carriage. Although not introduced to the West until 1930, the Basenji is among the oldest breeds; images of the breed are found in ancient Egyptian art. Known as the barkless dog, the Basenji is not mute. He can produce most of the usual dog sounds plus others peculiar to the breed, including chortles and yodels. Intelligent and strong-willed with a mischievous sense of humor, the Basenji deserves an owner who shares those traits.
