MISCELLANEOUS CLASS

This class was offered beginning in 1877, but not until the 1879 catalog is there a note that the Miscellaneous Class is “For dogs not specified in the above classification.” The 1889 catalog states that “The Miscellaneous Class shall be understood to comprise all pure breeds of dogs for which no regular class has been provided in the Premium list.”

Before 1924, dogs were occasionally entered by their owners/agents in the Miscellaneous Class despite the fact that there were regular classes available for them. Also, in those early years, some breeds may have been known by more than one name, whether correctly so or not. Occasionally, a mixed breed dog was entered in the Miscellaneous Class. Often a breed would be entered in Miscellaneous before entering in a regular class which, before 1924, didn’t matter as all dogs were eligible for further competition.

By 1924, according to new AKC rules, the Miscellaneous Class winner was not allowed to advance into competition in the newly-formed Groups. The last year that Westminster offered the Miscellaneous Class was 1963.
