An athletic scenthound, the American foxhound was developed to hunt over the roughest conditions and across the vast landscapes of North America. Their keen sense of smell enables them to follow at speed the scent left by the quarry. The huntsmen of Virginia developed the first true American foxhounds from English as well as French and Irish stock. Contrasting the English style of hunt, the American hound will hunt either individually or in a pack. In the American style of hunt, it is unusual for the fox to be caught or killed. Though variable, they are generally quite intelligent, lighthearted and jovial. They can make wonderful companion dogs.
