The fleet and powerful borzoi originated in Russia and was used by the Russian aristocracy to pursue and catch wolf, fox and hare. While still used for hunting, they excel as companions and show dogs, with gentle temperament and striking good looks. The borzoi is one of the largest sighthounds, averaging 28 to 32 inches at the shoulder, and a large male can weigh over 100 pounds.
