Meet the Grand Basset Griffon Vendeen

Through over 400 years of evolution, the Grand Basset Griffon Vendéen, more affectionately known as the “GBGV” or “Grand,” is derived, like all bassets, from hounds of superior size as early as the end of the 19th century in the region of Vendée in France. Today, primarily used when hunting in packs in their native homeland, as well as throughout Europe, the GBGV is capable of hunting a wide variety of game from the rabbit to wild boar. This noble breed is a rough-coated scent hound with elongated structure, well boned, standing 15 ½ to 18 inches at the withers and weighing approximately 45 to 55 lbs. While individual body parts may appear to be exaggerated, it is the length, width and well-muscled qualities which afford the GBGV it’s free and easy gait at all paces. It is behind the dark eyes that an independent hunter thrives true to their natural instincts. It is favored as a hunter, companion and friend to those willing to take the time to nurture and appreciate the characteristics that make them a unique breed.
