Brussels Griffon
Named for the capital of Belgium, the Brussels Griffon traces his roots to the Griffons d’Ecurie, wire coated stable dogs kept to kill vermin. Experts debate the breeds crossed to achieve today’s Griffon, but agree the Affenpinscher, Pug, and English Toy Spaniel were chief contributors. Crossings curtailed his ratting ability, but created the Griffon’s crowning glory – his magnificent head piece with almost human expression. A sturdy built toy usually weighting between 6-11 pounds, Griffons wear either a rough or smooth red, black, black and tan, or belge colored coat. High Intelligence, adaptable personality, and loving nature make him the consummate companion.
